Stav sits between your applications and the AI models you use. For each request it picks a model and a provider, applies your rules on where data may be processed, and records what happened. The company is based in Oslo, and the platform runs on servers in Norway.
The use of AI is moving from pilots into production: case management, customer support, internal tools and the products companies ship. In production, AI handles customer records, health data and commercially sensitive material.
That raises questions your security team, auditors and customers will ask. Which model processed the request, which provider ran it, and under which jurisdiction? GDPR, NIS2 and the EU AI Act expect you to be able to answer, and the requirements are still evolving. When every vendor has its own contract and dashboard, that answer is scattered across all of them.
The vendor market keeps growing more complex. The same open-weight model is served by many providers, with different pricing, quality, latency, retention terms and jurisdiction. We built Stav as a single point of integration and control in front of that market. You integrate one API and define your policies once. Stav enforces them on every request and records where each request ran.
Sovereignty comes down to who controls what.
Stav.ai AS is Norwegian and owned by its founders. We have no foreign parent company. Norwegian and EEA law governs how we handle customer data, and the CLOUD Act does not apply to us. Every vendor that handles customer data is listed on our compliance page.
We built and operate the gateway, including its policy engine and audit log, on infrastructure in Norway. Your policies are enforced in our code before a request leaves the gateway. If no provider meets them, the request is refused.
We don’t operate GPUs. Models run at the inference providers in our catalogue, and we grade each provider from L0 to L4 on ownership, jurisdiction and data handling. You set the minimum level your requests may use.
Founder and Chairman
Roland founded Jottacloud in 2008 and ran it for many years. Jottacloud stores files for people and businesses across Europe on the same principle as Stav: you decide where your data is kept.
CEO and co-founder
Trygve has founded and led several companies, most recently the consultancy Knowit Impact. He has spent many years leading IT consulting teams and advising management teams on technology, including AI. At Stav he runs the company and the commercial side.
Chief Product & Ecosystem Officer and co-founder
Bjørn Andreas has more than 25 years in technology, sales and strategy, mostly in leadership roles at Cisco, where he was responsible for the relationship with Telenor. At Stav he is responsible for technology partners and customer success.
Stav is in public beta. The platform is ready for production use and has been tested by external users. Provider grading, sovereignty floors, routing, audit logging and Stav Tunnel for your own models are all in place. Our MCP server lets developers manage keys, budgets and policies from the AI tools they already use. We keep adding providers and models during the beta.
Stav comes from bokstav, the Norwegian word for a letter. Letters make words for people, and tokens make words for models. Stav sits between the two.
