BAAI is a Beijing-government-backed non-profit research institute. It is best known for the widely used BGE embedding and reranker models, released openly on Hugging Face under permissive licences. It has no US corporate nexus, so CLOUD Act exposure is not indicated. It does face Chinese jurisdiction and a March 2025 US Entity List designation. Customers found no published AI Act statement, privacy policy, DPA or security certifications on its website, so regulated EU users should do their own due diligence on provenance, supply chain and licensing.
