An 8B-parameter Qwen cross-encoder reranker for scoring query-document relevance at up to 40,960 tokens of context.
Overview. Qwen3-Reranker-8B is an 8-billion-parameter cross-encoder reranking model built by Qwen (Alibaba), fine-tuned from Qwen3-8B-Base and released under the Apache-2.0 licence. Rather than generating text, it scores the relevance of a query against a candidate document, making it a purpose-built component for retrieval pipelines. It is the larger sibling of the Qwen3 Reranker 0.6B model, giving developers a bigger-capacity option within the same reranking series when they need finer discrimination between candidates.
Key strengths. As a dense 8B cross-encoder, it has more capacity for nuanced relevance judgments than the smaller 0.6B variant in the same series, which matters when candidate documents are long, similar in topic, or close in relevance. Its native 40,960-token context window lets it score long documents and queries in a single pass without truncation, which is a meaningful advantage for retrieval over lengthy source material. It ships as open weights under Apache-2.0, so teams can inspect, fine-tune, or self-host it rather than depend solely on a hosted endpoint.
When to use it. Reach for this model as the reranking stage of a retrieval or RAG pipeline, after an initial retriever has narrowed candidates and you need an accurate second-pass relevance score. It's a good fit when documents or queries run long, since the 40,960-token window avoids splitting content that a smaller-context reranker would need to truncate. It is not a general-purpose chat or generation model — it has no streaming, tool calling, or structured-output support — so it should only be used for the query-document scoring task it was built for.
Limitations. This is a single-purpose scoring model: it does not support streaming responses, tool calling, JSON/structured output, or vision and audio input, and it has no separate system-prompt interface. No official training-data cutoff date has been published, and no independent quality or latency benchmarks are available, so it cannot yet be placed on Stav's standard quality or latency tiers.
Sovereignty note. The model is distributed as open weights under Apache-2.0, so it can be self-hosted for full control over where inference and data reside rather than relying solely on the hosted Fireworks AI endpoint. No verified information on the creator's CLOUD Act exposure or training-on-input policy is available for this model.

Purpose-built reranker model from the Qwen3 series with a 40960-token context window, directly targeting document reranking workloads in retrieval pipelines.
As a dedicated reranker, this model is a core component of semantic search pipelines, refining candidate retrieval results with strong query-document relevance scoring.
While not a generative QA model, its reranking capability improves the relevance of retrieved passages feeding into RAG answer generation stages.
Reranker architectures are fundamentally relevance-classification models, giving it plausible transfer to binary/multi-class classification tasks over text pairs.
No flagged generative or reasoning capabilities are documented; this model's role is scoring/reranking rather than answering questions over documents directly.
Architecture is optimized for relevance scoring/reranking rather than generative query reformulation, making it a suboptimal fit despite shared retrieval domain.
No extraction or structured-output capabilities are flagged; this is a scoring model, not suited to producing structured data outputs.
